Medical University of Lodz (MUL)

The scope of Medical University of Lodz (MUL) is based on over 70 year-long history. MUL was in the first 20 beneficiaries of “Excellence Initiative – Research University” and was awarded with prestigious European “Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R)” logo.

MUL makes a substantial contribution to the development of the health care system by promoting modern standards of prophylaxis and treatment, and by building long-lasting cooperation with institutions realising objectives of public health at regional, national and international levels.

In response to the demographic challenge, the Healthy Ageing Research Centre was founded in 2011. MUL has reached the leading position in various research areas, and particularly in patient adherence and healthy ageing. The University is the only medical school in Poland belonging to the European Knowledge and Innovation Community EIT Health with the status of Lead Partner and was awarded a three-star status as a Reference Site of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA).

MUL is considered a leader in the number of scientific publications and citations among medical schools in Poland.

The Development Strategy of the MUL focuses on four strategic areas: education, research, development, and collaboration in the development of the health care service. In 2012, a brand new Teaching Centre, one of the most modern clinical centres in Europe, was opened in MUL.

Unique university campus -CKD Campus is integrating clinical hospitals, research and teaching units. Serving over 86.000 patients yearly, MUL is also one of the major local healthcare providers, active in each area of modern medicine. University has also been exploiting opportunities by placing Healthy Ageing, Civilisations Diseases, Biomedicine and Public Health in the focus of its research strategies, and linking them with the national and regional Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (cooperation with local government units).

As the leading infrastructure for science in Poland, we offer a unique ecosystem based on Knowledge Triangle, integrating scientists, clinicians, R&D, teachers and students. Strategic partnerships of MUL were set up with leading business representatives: Phillips, Roche, GE, Comarch. Clinical hospitals and modern Clinical and Didactic Centre together with the Academic Oncology Centre aim at improving the quality of education and upgrade the training offer for the academic staff. The supporting didactic and research facilities include three clinical hospitals and 80 clinical departments of an annual clinical capacity exceeding 86.000 patients; a new Didactic Centre, comprising a fully computerised auditorium for 1.000 attendees, and 20 modern didactic and laboratory rooms of a total capacity of 1100 seats; Information and Library Centre linked with the Knowledge and Innovation Hub (KIH) and Research, and Strategies and Development Office based on modern project management methodologies Prince2 and Balanced Scorecard. Centre of Innovation and Technology Transfer (CIiTT) facilitates IP protection and commercialisation of research. Seven unique new generation laboratories allow for cutting-edge research in biology, medicine, biotechnology, genomics and proteomics. Among these are the Central Scientific Laboratory CoreLab, BioBank, HumanLab and VirLab, all are directly related to R&D activities and educational activities.

MUL is member of European University Association and an experienced partner when it comes to international cooperation a total number of EU funded projects has reached 120 (full list: https://umed.pl/nauka/projects/). Annually the University runs over 100 scientific (national and international) projects externally financed. The leading areas of research activities in doctoral school are immunology, molecular biology, genetics, oncology and endocrinology. Civilisation diseases such as cancers, metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases and pulmonary diseases, are among strategic fields of scientific development as well as of innovation for healthy and active ageing. MUL delivers up-to-date comprehensive medical education and scientific research. In close collaboration with health and care institutions at regional, national and international level, MUL actively contributes to the development of high standard modern health and care systems and relevant policies. University Faculty of Medicine was the only one in Poland that obtained the prestigious A+ category.

MUL is one of the largest public medical universities in Poland, with over 9500 Polish students in 16 medicine and public health-related disciplines. Over 900 foreigners study medicine and dentistry in English. MUL employs 1.600 academic and research staff: 180 full professors, 180 assistant and associate professors and nearly 850 PhD academics.

Role in the project

The Medical University of Lodz (MUL) leads Work Package 5 (WP5) Pilots Implementation in the TEAMCARE project, focusing on developing tools and guidelines to implement the interprofessional curriculum within EU higher education and vocational training frameworks.

As a key partner, MUL is responsible for producing recommendations and supporting the scalability of the curriculum to various national contexts in four countries (Greece, Ireland, Italy and Poland).

The university’s expertise ensures alignment with EU standards, particularly the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and micro-credentials, enhancing the curriculum’s adaptability and impact.
